Another Artist Arrives!

Goodbye Michigan, Hello New York! Jason Polan has arrived and not a moment too soon. New York was short just one artist and Jason has filled the spot. He is a 25 year old doodler and his mission is to sketch all 8 million people in New York.
Gawker.com has figured out it will take him 615 years to complete his art project drawing five days a week. Not to mention the millions of dollars for the cost of sketch books and pens.
Ok, back to reality. I just have one question. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU AFFORD RENT??? HOW? How do you move to the most expensive city in the world, draw horrible sketches of people (notice the resemblance in the pictures above) all day long and pay rent, bills, food, etc? Thanks a lot Jason, by putting your name out there you've probably just inspired another 1000 poseur transplants to come here and show us their skills. Remember, tell Mommy and Daddy rent is due the 5th of each month.

Sounds like a tragic story waiting to happen. Let's make it happen, people!

Excuse me, Midwesterners are better and more hard working then you dopes in NY,NJ,CT,Mass,RI,VT,PA,and VT. We feel that we need to move there to culture you and to make your world better.
Our parents don't pay our bills, we get the same magical 5000 a month in the bank account from god that you do. Maybe god doesn't like you so you don't get that magical 5000 a month like we do.
Still, were harderworking, did you know I work a whole 10 hrs a week, thats allot of time spent away from my art. Thank god for that magical 5000 dollars a month. You know what, were not raising your cost of living, you are for being so uncool and uncultured.

A whole ten hours a week? Wow that will boost the economy. By the way cool & culture does not come from a PBR.

oh please. a whopping 10 hours? fuck you! i work 40 hours + and i am in school, yet i find time to work on my music and other endeavors.
learn how to manage time, and not managing mommy and daddy's money you obviously are receiving.
by default, being from the midwest means you have no culture.

Why did you even respond to that. It was obviously a joke. Poor satire, but satirical nonetheless. At least Plumlee's blog was funny. A sense of humor is what this site is sorely lacking.

When I look at this kid, I am reminded of how much I would love to beat the shit out of these kids. I actually provide the City and State of New York something useful, I am a fireman. Problem is, I had to move to Colonie NY next to Albany to afford a house and commute to Manhattan every other day. Something is wrong here, why is it some midwestern douchebag gets to live in the place of my birth and where I work while I have to commute sometimes 2 hrs a day. There is a reason why these kids weren't in NY back in the day. People used to care about the neighborhoods and the cops would turn their eyes as we beat the pulp out of them till they went back to Ohio.

You idiot meatheads just love proving that I'm right over and over again, and you just keep coming back for more like the brainless idiots that you are.
We all know the REAL truth by now. Judging from their comments, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from "tough guy" non-intellectual homophobic macho types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. At some point in their lives they probably got mocked and ridiculed, or even had beer poured all over their heads, by some downtown girl with a tattoo (aka "hipster") after trying to pull some lame move on them. If you think about it, in some ways the entire hipster revolution came about to mock and ridicule such people and their mentalities. It's not about meat and muscle anymore. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can. Remember...you can always rate the amount of insecurity someone has by the amount they rant about hipsters.

As a native New Yorker, I'm not defending this kid or saying anything about "hipsters" in general, but you've posted this "moving to Albany" bit on a couple of posts now. The gentrification hasn't moved THAT far. Yeah, you can't live on the Lower East Side or in Williamsburg with a working class salary, but certainly a fireman could afford a nice place in a nice area of Queens, further south in Brooklyn, or at the very worst, east Brooklyn or the Bronx. There aren't enough of these people yet to drive you to Albany. Also, threats of violence don't quit dispel the stereotype of the angry New Yorker.

I live in Hudson NY and commute 2 hrs each day. I don't think you really have a clue on how bad things are. I have a family of four, how can I afford a house anywhere within 60 miles of the city.
I admit, I moved up this way since my wife found a job, but none the less, I would have moved to Poughkipsee or Middletown due to the cost of living. My wife and I grew up in Bayridge, don't believe me ask me any question about it. I went to Bishop Laughlin High School class of 1988. Listen, a house where I am at now goes for under $200,000 a year. As a fireman I make only $45,000 a year and my wife is a teacher. She couldn't even get work in Brooklyn due to the amount of people who moved there looking to be teachers.
We had no other choice but to leave. Allot of people are doing what I am doing, if you think otherwise do a google search on properties in Colombia and Greene Counties. People are moving here and telecommuting because you have no other choice. Once you have a family you will see why we have to.

I suppose if you MUST have a house, you're probably right. Still, there are large apartments in good areas of Queens for a little over that price. However, for THAT problem, I wouldn't blame a bunch of college or post-college kids who are grabbing up 1-2k a month apartments and rooming with people for a couple years in NY, distasteful though they may be. The outpricing of the working class is just the inevitable effect of neoliberal economic policy and capitalism in general. And yeah, it sucks if you know what the city used to be, but these kids are a huge red herring.

EXACTLY! Finally someone has some brains. As was said over and over before...
The ignorant anti-hipster ranters on here would like to have you believe that their hated of hipsters is based on the perception that hipsters are responsible for gentrification and rent increases. The idea that hipsters are solely responsible for gentrification is already highly debatable. Intelligent discourse would tell you that the root causes of gentrification are multi-factorial, and include greedy developers and landlords, our capitalistic economic system, as well as whoever might moving into a gentrifying neighborhood to feed into the system...hipster or not. In fact, gentrification also takes place in neighborhoods that don't have a high hipster populations at all. An example of this would be the expansion of Columbia University into "Manhattanville" in West Harlem (http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/property/2006/05/columbias_manha.html). Clearly there is more to gentrification than just hipsters alone. Anti-hipster sentiment based on gentrification is not only misplaced and misguided, but is really a manifestation of deeper psychological issues.
Anti-hipster sentiment is really based on a resentment of people who have healthier and more fulfilling social lives. Judging from their comments, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from "tough guy" non-intellectual homophobic macho types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, physically slimmer, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. Dear Anonymous:
No. What you and all the other hipster appologists FAIL to address is the downright shitty behavior on the part of the gentrifiers and hipsters. I've said this so many times..but Taf will say again....THE PROBLEM IS APARTHEID. Once they move in, I am treated like I don't belong there, even though I was born there and now own an apt. there. Im sick and tired of these assholes with their midwestern fears and prejudices. HIPSTERS & GENTRIFIERS, why do you just sit in Hasbeans on 5th in S. Slope and stare into your apple laptop? Why do you clutch your bag tightly when my kids walk down the street? Why do you stare at us like we are aliens? Why do the cops come when YOU call? Why can't you be a part of the community that's already there? YOU WILL NEVER ANSWER THIS. And, that kids is why you are so hated.
Love,
Taf

Clearly there is more to gentrification than just hipsters alone. Anti-hipster sentiment based on gentrification is not only rational and justified, but is really a manifestation of deeper issues.
Anti-hipster sentiment is really based on a resentment of people who have no empathy for the misery they cause others. Judging from their comments, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from the total disdain hipsters, yuppies, and snobs exhibit towards the people they displace. At some point in their lives they probably got mocked and ridiculed, or even had beer poured all over their heads, by some downtown girl with a tattoo, chlamydia, herpes, yeast infection, cooties, crabs, gonorrhea (aka "hipster") after she’s gotten totally inebriated at a bar. If you think about it, in some ways the entire hipster revolution came about to mock and ridicule normal established social customs of a civilized society. It's not about meat and muscle anymore. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with the pseudo intellectual bullshit flying around and don’t care to. Remember...you can always rate the amount of hatred someone has by the amount they rant about hipsters, yuppies, and snobs.

Is that an attempt at irony or is your name in regards to your own confused sence of sexual identity?
Anyway, I find hispters annoying as the next non-hipster, but maybe this guy CAN afford his rent...

That's 16 grand minus gallery fee, so what, 8 grand for a few hundred doodles, and getting to meet hot lithe chicks as well? Not a bad gig.

I live in the Hudson Valley and I can confirm that the tentacles of NYC gentrification HAVE reached all the way up here. A lot of yuppies have bought homes up here, pushing the prices way up. They commute to their jobs in the city via Metro-North, the Thruway, etc. There are very few good jobs here since IBM went down the toilet, and the region is slowly becoming one big bedroom community/weekend retreat for white collar and "creative class" NYC professionals. As you can imagine, there's a lot of resentment on the part of natives and other long-time residents toward the moneyed, often arrogant newcomers in their McMansions and expensive, road-hogging SUVs. I was born in Brooklyn myself but I often find myself sneering at these "citiots." But they're not real NYC people as far as I'm concerned. They just happened to make their fortunes there.

PS: I think it's disgusting that a FDNY fireman can't even afford to live comfortably in the city where he works. What is New York coming to?

I mean no disrespect, but no one is stopping you from retraining to do something else to eventually make more money.

Yeah, who needs firemen, anyway?
You yuppie fucks will put out your own fires, right?

What's with your fruity response? I don't even live in your filthy city, so I couldn't care less what happens there.
If someone is complaining that much about what they make, it is up to them to do something about it.
