the same thing happens with almost any subculture in this city, hipster or not. once the numbers get big within any group, then sooner or later the corporations catch on and start marketing toward them. the media starts to reflect them. more people start imitating them. its only a matter of time before certain aspects of that subculture become the main culture.
i used to view hipsters as edgy creatve types whose lifestyle was adamantly against the mainstream. now its different. now they dress similar, act similar, listen to similar music.. the only thing i can see that sets them apart form the rest of us nowadays is that theyre slightly more extreme with their outfits, haircuts, and number of shows they go to. bascially, anyone can join in if they want to become a hipster, because the subculture now has a set of defining qualities reflected by the vast majority of people within it. like a set of reference points for the next wave of hipsters to follow and become carbon copies.
i get the sense that most of these hipsters I see nowadays learned "hipsterism" by seeing it all over TV, webistes, ads, the media. thats why so many are the same now - because they learned it from teh same place. so the newer generations arent hipsters themselves - theyre imitators. its kinda like evolution - once you make it through a few generations with a new set of mutations, then no member of the group resembles any member of the original group. the mutation has become inherent to all the members.
i think the area where they run into trouble is when they start to think theyre more important and cooler than the rest of us. because relly, lets face it, nowadays the whole concept of true "hipsterism" as a movement is obsolete, since the most defining quality now is its mainstreamness. one of the most inherent traits of hipsterism is a separation from the mainstream - and its why, in order to conserve it after it has BECOME mainstream, you hear hipsters claiming that others in the group arent really "hipster". you start to see separations within the group. self-comparisons. "that guy only wears hipster clothes on the weekend so hes not as hipster as me, becaus ei wear hipster clothes all the time". but when its just about the clothes you wear and the haircut you have, or the bands you listen to, or the bars you go to, all defined by someone else as "hipster", then doesnt that make you and everyone else in your group a poseur too?
also, this person posting in defense of hipsters on this board. the only examples he lists as ways the hipsters have revolutionized modern culture are things like hairstyles and jeans being sold at the Gap. that doesnt impress me.

This guy loves to respond to his own posts with some pre-fab retorts and comments on hipster life. Clearly, unlike the creativity that his hipster friends claim, he lacks all of it, otherwise he would have the ability to come up with his own hipster b.s., as opposed to crap that he cut and pasted from someplace else.
Listen up hipster unisexual: you are no better than any group of young people with common interests- hip hop kids, skater kids, nerds, jocks or stoners, you guys are no different. The only small difference is that these hipster kids think that they are special- they are not. Most people just laugh at them or brush them aside as they have much better things to do than get annoyed at hipsters. In essence, that it what hipsters are really about: getting attention. Whether it is negative attention or positive attention, the hipsters crave it. These kids still have many issues from their teen and childhood years. Show me a hipster without emotional issues and I'll show you a hipster who can do a push-up.
One of the most common traits of hipster kids is that they are all pussies. Believe me, I have seen on numerous occasions, both in Brooklyn and Manhattan people pick on these rail-think dorks, a la the way they were treated in high school. The typical hipster response is to run into trader joe's and use their hipster camouflage to blend in with the other pussies.
Now, this hipster fairy will probably reply to my post with another post that he has posted a thousand times before, and on the bottom will say something about two sets of photos- one being of hipsters, who always have girls the photos, and one being of non-hipsters, who never have girls in the photos. This guy wants to give the facade that hipsters are puling ass. If you look at the boys in these photos, you will notice that they would be rejected, so quickly, by any other group of young people with common interests. No one is interest in a feminine-looking boy, who would truly get his ass handed to him by your average 13 year-old boy; quite pathetic actually. Believe me, hipsters rarely have girls, and when they do have girls they are usually fat, ugly dyke-looking chicks who are usually very unkempt.
So go ahead hispter douchebag, go ahead and post your shit that you have posted a thousand time before, word for word, with the same set of photos. However, we will still laugh at you tomorrow on our way to work, at work and after work. Believe me, no one is jealous of you. In fact, we actually feel bad for you: whereas we have grown up and gotten out of whichever false identity some of took on as an adolescent, you still cling tightly to whatever hope of identity and group of friends you still have left.

Yup, you just proved me correct once again. At least the intelligent and socially well-adjusted people know that I'm right. Anti-hipster sentiment is really based on a resentment of people who have healthier and more fulfilling social lives. Judging from their comments, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from "tough guy" non-intellectual homophobic macho types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, physically slimmer, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. At some point in their lives they probably got mocked and ridiculed, or even had beer poured all over their heads, by some downtown girl with a tattoo (aka "hipster") after trying to pull some lame move on them. If you think about it, in some ways the entire hipster revolution came about to mock and ridicule such people and their mentalities. It's not about meat and muscle anymore. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can. Remember...you can always rate the amount of insecurity someone has by the amount they rant about hipsters.

What is a culturally aware hipster and when was the last time a hipster went to a museum, an opera or some other event that didn't involve meth & PBR?
Grow a brain and do something constructive with your life. Give up the frat boy lifestyle. Don't be afraid of people who are bigger than you, they won't hurt you unless they are provoked. It is not too late to be a constructive member of society. It is easy to take a shower, use soap, a toothbrush snd deodorant. There are people who can help, you just have to ask for help.
