Sadness from Seattle
Thanks to a reader all the way from Seattle for this link to a Seattle paper's "Other Sports" section and her e-mailed comment. Now, most of us know that a lot of these hipsters come from places like Seattle and Portland, but as you can see there are normal people there too that can't stand hipsters either.
She says "I hate these people and sadly I work with one of them."

Check out this athlete as he prepares for a ferocious game of Dodgeball in McCarren Park, Brooklyn. I guess he uses the same hipster uniform for all sorts of activities like strolling down Bedford Ave, attending horrific art gallery exhibits, parties in Bushwick lofts, and of course Dodgeball in the Pool. I guess the irony of being dressed opposite the way you're supposed to for sports is overwhelming his brain as is his asymmetrical hair cut. Can you imagine the sun beaming down on you on a hot summer day as you're about to start running, jumping and stretching while you're wearing skin tight denim pants that are crushing your balls and chafing your thighs? But hey, that's the price you pay for trying to be cool, talented, and famous after the age of 21 even though you're not. |

I'm glad you're finally catching on to the fact that basically anyone who embraces a youthful and edgy urban style, who enjoys going to rock shows and divey-type bars is labeled a hipster these days. These people represent a significant fraction of the under-30 population in this city who enjoy keeping up with the latest in nightlife, music, art, and culture. Hipterism is the new mainstream, and basically anyone with a healthy and active social life is a "hipster". It's irrelevant whether hipsters truly re-invented certain elements of culture and style, or if they're just cultural consumers and social leeches like others would retort. It's simply the new reality.
Judging from their comments, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from "tough guy" non-intellectual homophobic macho types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, physically slimmer, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. At some point in their lives they probably got mocked and ridiculed, or even had beer poured all over their heads, by some downtown girl with a tattoo (aka "hipster") after trying to pull some lame move on them. If you think about it, in some ways the entire hipster revolution came about to mock and ridicule such people and their mentalities. It's not about meat and muscle anymore. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can. Remember...you can always rate the amount of insecurity someone has by the amount they rant about hipsters. Ranting against hipsters is like ranting against the fact that the sun comes up every morning... except the meatheads still don't get it...

I should also add as a reminder to the intelligent and socially well-adjusted people who are new to this site that...
The ignorant anti-hipster ranters on here would like to have you believe that their hated of hipsters is based on the perception that hipsters are responsible for gentrification and rent increases. The idea that hipsters are solely responsible for gentrification is already highly debatable. Intelligent discourse would tell you that the root causes of gentrification are multi-factorial, and include greedy developers and landlords, our capitalistic economic system, as well as whoever might moving into a gentrifying neighborhood to feed into the system...hipster or not. In fact, gentrification also takes place in neighborhoods that don't have a high hipster populations at all. An example of this would be the expansion of Columbia University into "Manhattanville" in West Harlem (http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/property/2006/05/columbias_manha.html). And also take a look at this other article...http://comm-org.wisc.edu/papers2000/gentrify/contents.htm . Read it in detail, or at least look at the flow chart in the first chapter if you're smart enough to do that. You'll see that that causes of gentrification are multi-factorial, where the root causes are NOT because of the wealthier people who move in to a new neighborhood. That is merely just a symptom of deeper underlying social issues.
Clearly there is more to gentrification than just hipsters alone. The fact that meatheads blame hipsters for everything wrong with their lives is not only misplaced and misguided, but is really a manifestation of deeper psychological issues.

First of all thanks for being my #1fan. Second of all have a look around if you ever leave your apartment, 95% of the people you see aren't hipsters. Why do you see things differently? Doesnt it suck to know that you can't win an argument against 10 million people? One more thing, does ctrl V work on a mac like it does on a pc?

Ok, I've been reading this blog for a while now, (all the way from Vancouver, Canada next to hipster lane, aka: Main St.
I understand your desire to allow Trey Parasuco to flood the comments section with his cut and paste spam, and I half-heartedly see your viewpoint with showing the world what PBR wastoid-enablers are capable of... but his 15 minutes are up, and sometimes a troll is a troll is a troll. Can't you moderate the site a little? No doubt Mr. Trey will cry victim that his trolling viewpoint has been "censored", but honestly, his frequency of posts and re-posts is starting to become, well... puzzling and unsettling.

I am truly disgusted with these "I am so ironic that I am so totally rad and Ironic" people... I come from what could be considered a low-middle class family and use financial aid for schooling (College seems to be an crap extension of highschool)... all I see are these overzealous overly liberal (no offense to left wingers, honestly) pieces of shit living throughout all areas I have frequented here. They drive rent and property prices up (which is why my family had to sell my birth-home and move extremely westward) and dilute others with their almost theological "indie" beliefs. I am sick of this bullshit and I hope these little "Trendsters" as I would call them would shut the fuck up or get hit by the same Toyota Prius or 1-Speed bike they rode in on and oh so cherish. As many know, Chicago is a huge, if not the biggest gang capital and murder capital per capita in the country (well, beside Detroit, MI) and is one being more gentrified and sickly diluted with excessive taxes... but despite the gangs and the violence... I almost prefer that over these annoying Hipster pieces of shit... they are really the scum of the Earth! This little Trey bitch... Needs to go back to Orange County, California with the rest of the trust fund trendy babies and drown while "ripping rad currents" on their sex-waxed surfboards... For fucks sake, being broke and paying only $12.99 a month for the internet is alright... but now I cannot even wear a pair of dungarees with holes in them because I refuse to invest in more pairs... makes me a fucking piece of shit like they are and always will be.
I am done with these people, I have less a problem with gangbangers I know (which far outnumber non-gangmembers usually) than I do with them.
